Patricia Ramey

Patricia Humiston Ramey is an American Artist born in San Diego, CA and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. She currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado. Creating a painting in Ms. Ramey’s mind is often inspired by an emotion, image, lived experience or sound from nature. She is an abstract- realist painter with an affinity for the landscape, seascape and aspen forest. Ms. Ramey creates paintings of fluid calm and serenity that are filled with energy, color and movement.

Ms. Ramey grew up as an only child who spent most of her time on an ice rink or in a ballet studio and always desired to be a professional visual artist. Her desire was supported by her father who encouraged her interest in art by frequent train trips to the Art Institute of Chicago coupled with stops at art supply stores on the way home. Like many creative children, her parents encouraged her art studies throughout her education, but being an art major in college was not something that her parent’s endorsed. It was impressed upon her to choose a major that would be financially more stable and utilized her artistic talent. She chose to study Interior Architecture in the College of Architecture at Arizona State University and received a Bachelor of Science in Design in 1987. It was a wonderful choice that allowed for plenty of studio art to be integrated into her college course work.

Ms. Ramey worked in the architecture and commercial design industry for many years with her last years of her career for the iconic furniture manufacturer, Knoll. Surrounded by Knoll’s long standing emphasis on impeccable design and pure artistic influence cemented her long standing desire to become a professional artist. While raising two daughters and finding the time to focus on her passion to study art again, Ms. Ramey began studying at the Art Students League of Denver. There she had the opportunity to study with under David Griffin, Sandra Kaplan, Ron Hicks, Joshua Falick and Doug Dawson. These accomplished artists were an incredible influence that encouraged experimentation in style and materials culminating in the ability to experiment without fear and enjoy the creative inspiration to carry her forward.

Ms. Ramey is often inspired by her extensive travels and the beautiful landscape of Colorado. An image or feeling will capture her and she is compelled to find a way to translate that to a painting. Her process often begins with quick watercolor studies which serve as her sketchbook. These watercolor studies are a wonderfully spontaneous way to translate the emotion she feels onto paper. Her studio is filled with hundreds of these colorful fresh studies that she uses as inspiration to begin her paintings. Layers of paint and oil glazes are then applied to the canvas which begin to create a rich elegant depth. Ms. Ramey’s paintings evoke an emotional bond and true connection with the observer.

Her work is held in both corporate and private collections.
